Algorithmic Detection of Prescribing Cascades
Description
In an ageing population, patients with multimorbidity and, consequently, polypharmacy are becoming increasingly common. This also increases the risk of adverse drug reactions and, inherently, the likelihood of prescribing cascades. Prescribing cascades occur when the side effects of a medication are mistakenly identified as new medical conditions, leading to the prescription of additional medications to treat these perceived conditions.
In collaboration with the Foundation for "Farmaceutische Kengetallen" (SFK), we are developing an algorithm to efficiently detect prescribing cascades in community pharmacies. Pharmacists will then receive knowledge documents, based on current literature, to support them in identifying, discussing and addressing these cascades in consultation with prescribers.
