Early Detection and Management of Adverse Drug Reactions in Primary Care

Medications can sometimes cause side effects that are not always immediately recognised. To treat these symptoms, additional medications may subsequently be prescribed. This is known as a prescribing cascade. By identifying side effects at an earlier stage, such cascades can be prevented. A visit to the general practitioner may help achieve this, but it can be time-consuming and is not always practical.

The new module, which is part of an existing Personal Health Environment, enables users to easily report side effects and other symptoms that may be caused by medications. The module includes an overview of known side effects that may lead to prescribing cascades, while also providing the opportunity to report other symptoms. The information entered by patients is shared with the pharmacist. Using guidelines, the pharmacist can then assess whether potential side effects are present and, if necessary, work with the physician to take appropriate action.
