Prescribing Cascades Brought to Attention at Rijnstate Hospital
During Medication Safety Week, Yannick Nielen delivered a presentation on prescribing cascades at Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem. This took place as part of the symposium ‘Praten over pillen’ where physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians gathered to discuss medication safety. Prescribing cascades—where a side effect of a medication is mistakenly perceived as a new condition and treated with additional medication—proved to be an unfamiliar yet recognizable phenomenon for many attendees. This led to engaging discussions and numerous questions about potential solutions to disrupt these cascades and prevent unnecessary medication use.
