New Approach to Medication Use in Hospitals: Empowering Patients with Greater Autonomy

Patients will gain more control over their medication use during hospital stays. By continuing to use their own medications from home while admitted, care can be better aligned with their home situation, making it more personalized and safer. Additionally, by reporting which medications they use at home, outpatient visits will become more efficient and secure.

Six Dutch hospitals have been awarded a total of €4.1 million through the Integraal Zorgakkoord (IZA) to implement a transformation plan aimed at improving self-management of medication use in hospitals. This initiative is expected to save approximately €2.5 million annually in medication costs and free up 30 healthcare professionals for other tasks.
