Prescribing Cascades
Description
Due to the growing and aging global population, the number of patients with polypharmacy and complex pharmacotherapy is increasing, along with the risk of side effects. Prescribing cascades occur when these side effects are not adequately recognized as such, but are instead perceived as new medical conditions and subsequently treated with additional medications. These prescribing cascades are associated with negative outcomes such as reduced quality of life, hospitalizations, and additional costs. Although the literature describes various prescribing cascades and concepts for recognizing and addressing them, little is known about the most effective ways to prevent, recognize, and address prescribing cascades. This research therefore focuses on developing evidence-based and effective strategies for healthcare providers and patients to better prevent, recognize, and address prescribing cascades in clinical practice.
