Prescribing Cascades and ADRs (PRESCRIBE-ADRs)

Description

Prescribing cascades occur when an adverse drug reaction (ADR) of a first medication (the index medication) is treated as a new condition with a second medication (the marker medication). Three options for preventing prescribing cascades exist: 1) dose reduction of the index medication, 2) discontinuation of the index drug, 3) replacement of the index drug. Treating ADRs with marker medication should be a last resort option. However, it is unknown which interventions healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients choose in practice, and whether this intervention subsequently resolves the ADR.

The primary aim of this study is to assess the frequency of interventions of reported ADRs, based on spontaneous ADR reports submitted to the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb. The study will initially focus on ADRs of cardiovascular agents, since cardiovascular agents are known to be involved in several prescribing cascades which are frequently discussed in literature.
