Prescribing cascades: a patients’ perspective

This research project focuses on prescribing cascades, and more specifically on the patients’ perspective on prescribing cascades. Prescribing cascades occur when an adverse drug reaction (ADR) to one medication is treated with additional medication. Regardless of whether the prescribing cascade is intentional, it has been associated with multiple negative outcomes for both patients and the healthcare system in general. Despite an increasing awareness, prescribing cascades remain difficult to identify.
We aim to get a better understanding of how patients experience prescribing cascades, including their level of awareness, and their perspective on their own role and the role of healthcare professionals in recognizing, resolving, and preventing them. In addition, we want to gain more insight in how ADRs are treated in daily clinical practice and whether these interventions are effective.
Lastly, a key objective of this research project is to develop an application that supports the proactive monitoring of patients for ADRs and improves their timely diagnosis, consequently contributing to the prevention of prescribing cascades.
This research is part of a series of projects on prescribing cascades: Patient Perspectives on Prescribing Cascades (P3C): "A Qualitative Study in the Netherlands" and Prescribing Cascades and ADRs (PRESCRIBE-ADRs).
